Rising Damp

In older properties in Sydney (say within a 15km radius) rising damp is common. It is caused by brick or sandstone piers absorbing moisture from the soil and via capillary action rising up the wall to eventually evaporate in the interior of the property, causing the familiar musty damp smell found in old houses.
